Kevin and I wanted to get away for a quick weekend before the wedding. We picked Cancun since the flight is only an hour and a half and hotel rates were very reasonable. The weekend also turned into a celebration of surviving this terrible year, from surgery to multiple hospital stays and not being able to eat, it was not easy. My TPN was cut off three weeks before the trip and my port was removed so it was time to let my hair down and go swimming!
Where We Stayed
We stayed at the Marriott CasaMagna Cancun which is right on the beach. Our room had a large balcony overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. We arrived late Friday night, so we stayed in our room and ordered room service before passing out on the very comfy hotel bed.
We pretty much stayed on property the entire weekend, except for one dinner off-site at a local Mexican restaurant that was fantastic with sunset views. I enjoyed laying by the pool, having a drink at the swim-up bar, and getting a couples massage right on the beach.
We also booked a few excursions to have a little adventure. Our first excursion was a speed boat and snorkel trip. Each couple had their own little speedboat (it was tourist proof and was a go-kart on water) and followed our guide to a calm spot in the water for some snorkeling. The water was nice and refreshing and it was a complete change of scenery for me, considering up until the week before I couldn’t submerge myself fully under the shower because of my port.
The following day we decided to go parasailing, which was a very different experience than when we did it in Key West. To get on the boat you are taken by jet ski and it was almost like an action movie sequence. It was a bit of an adventure and fun, glad I did it, but probably won’t do it again. If you’ve been parasailing before, you probably know about being harnessed in, right? Well, not here. It was basically a lawn chair that you sat in, with no belts, and told to sit down and not get up and it was attached to the parachute . . . and that’s it. Safety issues aside, it was a blast and I really did enjoy it. We did get a laugh out of it too, which was worth it in the end.
We crammed a lot into a weekend but I’m glad we did. I had way too many bad days this year and I needed this getaway. The whole weekend I kept thinking about every day I spent in the hospital and the months I was stuck at home and not allowed to eat, it really only helped me enjoy each moment more.
If you can make it to Cancun, I highly recommend it.
