I’m writing this as a distraction while I prepare for surgery. I will schedule this to post probably a few days after I have surgery. I’m never without my iPad when I’m in the hospital. From streaming to games, it can really help entertain me during the endless hours I’m stuck in a hospital bed. Plus, if you’re stuck with a noisy roommate you can stick your headphones on and block out some of that noise.
Most of these games are actual board/card games that I discovered had mobile app versions. Here are some of my favorite games I play on my iPad:
Ticket to Ride
Ticket to Ride is a cross-country train adventure where players collect cards of various types of train cars that enable them to claim railway routes connecting cities in various countries around the world. This is the first board game Kevin introduced me to when we were first dating.
Splendor
Splendor is a game of chip-collecting and card development. Players are merchants of the Renaissance trying to buy gem mines, means of transportation, shops—all in order to acquire the most prestige points. The first player to reach 15 points wins.
Lords of Waterdeep
An exciting Euro-style board game set in Waterdeep, the greatest city and jewel of the Forgotten Realms. This immersive game casts players as Lords of Waterdeep who hire adventurers to complete quests.
Loveletter
Love Letter is a game of risk, deduction, and luck for 2–4 players. Your goal is to get your love letter into Princess Annette’s hands while deflecting the letters from competing suitors. From a deck with only sixteen cards, each player starts with only one card in hand; one card is removed from play. On a turn, you draw one card, and play one card, trying to expose others and knock them from the game. Powerful cards lead to early gains but make you a target. Rely on weaker cards for too long, however, and your letter may be tossed in the fire!
Sushi Go
In the super-fast sushi card game Sushi Go!, you are eating at a sushi restaurant and trying to grab the best combination of sushi dishes as they whiz by. Score points for collecting the most sushi rolls or making a full set of sashimi. Dip your favorite nigiri in wasabi to triple its value! And once you’ve eaten it all, finish your meal with all the pudding you’ve got! But be careful which sushi you allow your friends to take; it might be just what they need to beat you!
Roller Coaster Tycoon Classic
This is pure nostalgia for me. My brother and I used to play this on the family computer (remember when we had one computer for the entire household??). In “RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic”, you assume the role of the owner of a theme park, in control of everything from ride placement to to landscaping to staffing the park. You can start a brand new park or choose to modify a few different existing scenarios. You’ll place rides and food stalls, staff your park with mascots, janitors, security guards, and ride attendants. You’ll monitor guest approval and attempt to pay back massive loans. It’s great for people who love to be in games for the long run, as many scenarios often require fairly lengthy play sessions, and sandbox modes can be played indefinitely.
