After the Team Challenge Half-Marathon in Savannah, we headed up to Asheville, North Carolina. It was about a 5-hour drive from Savannah. Asheville was breathtaking. We went during peak leaf season and for not having seasons in Miami, we enjoyed every second of it.
Asheville has been on our rader for awhile now and I had heard so many good things about the city. In fact, I just found out my best friend is moving there next month. Yes, I will miss her, but it’s just another reason to visit Asheville over and over.
Where We Stayed
We rented this great Airbnb that was about 10 minutes from Downtown. It felt secluded but close enough to all the action. We arrived late at night and couldn’t really see what our view was until the morning. We opened the blinds the following morning like giddy kids on Christmas morning. The views were stunning and like I said before, it was peak leaf season.
The owner of the AirBnb lived right next door and her dog Amos, came around to say hi and check in on us. It was a two bedroom/two bath house with a garage and fireplace. Perfect for four people, or six if two people want to sleep on the pull-out couch.
Where We Ate
If you ever go to Asheville, you have to go to Biscuithead. It was fantastic. There was a line outside the door, but it didn’t take too long and it was worth the wait. The staff is friendly and the food is amazing.
While we were exploring Downtown Asheville we stumbled upon Carmel’s Kitchen & Bar, a place for eclectic southern comfort food. The service was great and once again we all walked out of there with our pants a little tighter.
I had the Southern Benny, which is a twist on your classic Eggs Benedict, poached eggs over souther style drop biscuit, pulled pork, and topped with smoked tomato hollandaise.
On our last night, we ended up at Tupelo Honey for more southern comfort food. It was a chilly night so I enjoyed a Hot Apple Cider with Bourbon, yumm. Kevin and I shared the fried chicken. We couldn’t leave the South without at least having some fried chicken.
Things to Do
The one thing I heard about over and over was The Biltmore Estate. It’s America’s largest home that was built by the Vanderbilts. We were lucky to be there right when the Christmas decorations went up. There was at least two Christmas trees in each room. This place made Downton Abbey look like a shed.
The North Carolina Arboretum was a nice little stop. You only pay for parking to enter the gardens, which are kept up really well. We explored throughout the morning and after eating at Biscuithead we really needed a long walk.
I’ve said this in previous travel posts, but we always like to do a city tour anytime we are in a new city. Gray Line had a great Hop On/Off Trolley Tour.
Can’t wait to go back! We flew back on Allegiant for the first time, and I’ve heard mixed reviews (just like with Spirit) but the price was great and they got us to where we needed to go.
