For over a year we had been discussing taking a train trip up to Savannah. I’ve never been and have always wanted to go, so we finally took the plunge and went. The train ride was a lot of fun and different and I’ll talk about that later.
Savannah was beautiful and everything was walking distance from our hotel in the historic district.
Where We Stayed
Hotel Indigo Savannah Historic District has cute little touches everywhere you look. There’s a bar and restaurant with live music at night and friendly staff to help with anything you need. If you bring a car your only option is valet and I noticed that was the main complaint on Trip Advisor. Growing up in the hospitality industry I just roll my eyes at those comments. Go to Manhatten or Miami Beach and most hotels charge $40 and up/night for valet parking.
Our room was perfect, the decor is more modern and the best part is that they stock their rooms with Aveda toiletries. I have baskets and baskets of hotel toiletries. My mom and I have a habit of always taking them. They are perfect for travel and when you forgot to buy more shampoo. I use the little body lotions to keep in my desk at work or my purse.
The location of the hotel was great. We walked to anything and everything. We felt like we walked the entire historic district before lunchtime.
Where We Ate
Huey’s on The River: We walked to Huey’s the first night we were in Savannah. We didn’t want to go straight to bed without seeing some of the city first. My friend recommended the beignets and I LOVE beignets. We sat at the bar and the place was quite charming, it’s an adorable southern cafe and bar. I have to be honest, I wasn’t that impressed with the beignets. I’ve had better at the Grand Lux Cafe. They weren’t bad, just not great. Maybe they were overhyped or maybe it was an off day.
Goose Feathers Cafe & Bakery: The first day we were up and ready to roll at 7:00 a.m. We wanted to get the most out of our one full day in Savannah. The city wasn’t quite ready for us and almost everything was closed. No one was in the streets, it was a ghost town. To be fair, I believe this was the offseason. Goose Feathers Cafe & Bakery, a European style cafe, and bakery was open and had plenty on the menu to start our day. I had the breakfast burrito because our server recommended it and was a perfect start for the day.
a.lure: A friend recommended this place and the menu looked really good so we decided to go for it. The place was small but most places in the historic district are. The service was superb and probably the best we had throughout our trip. The Shrimp and Grits are to die for, you must go here and try this entree. I want to go back to Savannah just for this dinner. The grits were more creamy and cooked with smoked bacon, so basically it was shrimps soaking in this creamy smoked bacon sauce. Heaven.
What We Did
Old Town Trolley: I love these trolly tours, especially when you can get on and off. You can really get the most out of it. I always love to actually see the sights and learn about the history of any new city I visit.
Savannah Riverboat: We took a lunchtime ride on the Savannah Riverboat to get even more history and sightseeing in our day. The weather was perfect and it was a beautiful day to see Savannah by the river. The riverboat even has a snack bar which is where we split a little basket of fried shrimp and fries for a light lunch.
There’s so much to see and do in Savannah I know it won’t be long before we go back. From the beautiful parks to the delightful sweet shops (you have to try the pralines!), I instantly fell in love with Savannah.
